It is well known that many of the Elder Futhark runes (the earliest known Scandinavian runes) had their origin in the Etruscan writing system. Remember that Etruscan was written right to left like Hebrew and Arabic, while Scandinavian runes were written left to right.  Therefore many of the Runic characters are reversed compared to Etruscan.  For more direct comparison, the Etruscan alphabet in a left to right format can be found at http://www.omniglot.com/writing/etruscan.htm.

For starters, here’s a chart of Etruscan characters and their Latin equivalents.
